Things To Do!

As the only island in Queensland connected to the mainland by bridge, Bribie Island projects a carefree community feel with a combination of calm bay beaches and surf beaches ideal for either a leisurely swim or surfing safari. We find there is never enough time to spend just exploring and relaxing at Woorim but if your stay is a little longer or the weather isn’t favourable, here are some great options to explore the rest of Bribie.

Visit the Bribie Island Seaside Museum

Located close to the waterfront and overlooking the iconic Pumicestone Passage, the Bribie Island Seaside Museum celebrates the rich and fascinating history of Bribie Island. Learn about the stories of Bribie and the people who shaped, lived and loved it at the Seaside Museum. Become acquainted with Matthew Flinders and his encounter at Skirmish Point. Reflect on the brilliant reclusive artist Ian Fairweather. Learn about the American troop occupation during World War II and get up close to the local bounty of the sea in the incredible fish collection of the Amateur Fishing Association of Queensland. Visitors can explore the intriguing and unique history of Bribie Island through various immersive, interactive displays and a variety of exciting events and workshops.

Take a walk through the National Park or go 4WD’ing (no dogs allowed)

Most of the Island is made up of National Park. Access the National Park by foot just 200m at the end of the street. View the rich array of birdlife, wallabies, kangaroos, possums and bandicoots with the surrounding marine park home to turtles, dugong, dolphins and migratory shorebirds. Or if you bought your own 4WD, buy a permit and explore The Ocean Beach drive which starts at the end of your street and continues along the beach for 23 km to Fort Bribie in the north of the island. Along the way explore cool creeks, take a break one of four tannin-stained freshwater lagoons, or stop and cast a line from the beach. Enjoy stunning views of Caloundra and Moreton Island and watch large ships pass close to the island, destined for the Port of Brisbane. At the north end of the drive, explore the heritage-listed World War II structures of Fort Bribie. In the dunes, discover weathered gun emplacements and searchlight buildings once used to defend Queensland’s coastline.

Didn’t bring your own 4WD? No problems, you can still take a day on one of the world’s largest sand islands. See iconic Australian wildlife, whilst safely on board a 4WD all-terrain vehicle with 4WD G’day Adventure Tours. Be mesmerised by the teatree stained lagoons of the area and learn the fascinating history of the island whilst exploring the World War Two fortifications. G’Day Adventure Tours offer a range of tours from 3.5 hour 4WD National Park/Bunker/Lagoon through to 3 day Fraser Island Camping Adventures.  They also offer easy Kayak hire at $50 for a full 24 hour period.

Pacific Harbour Golf Course offers as 18-hole championship golf course and is one of the best in the Brisbane region. Visit Bribie Island Butterfly House

This is a little hidden gem on Bribie Island. At Bribie Island Butterfly House, you will walk into a wonderland of flying butterflies! Around 700-1000 butterflies are housed in an outdoor sanctuary where they are safe to fly, feed, breed, lay their eggs and continue their magical life cycle which you can explore up close and personal. At the butterfly breeding lab viewing area you can see our volunteers at work, looking after the eggs and chrysalises, and feeding our hungry caterpillars. Wander through the tunnel and watch a short video capturing the life cycle of a Monarch butterfly, then emerge into the magical, flower filled butterfly sanctuary where you can see hundreds of butterflies flying on any day. Tip: Wear bright colours and have your camera ready when a butterfly lands on you.
